Tasty coffee and sweets for great price

Best value for money for a cake shop in Budapest not far from the city centre! Amazing selection of high quality cakes serviced by friendly staff. My personal favourite is the Soproni Túrós that I keep going back for weekly. The real question is not whether to visit it or not (definitely yes!) but why have we not heard of Rigó Jancsi yet? A bit more marketing might be helpful since it is one of those hidden gems that once you tried it, you will not want to overspend elsewhere as you get everything here: low prices, quantity, quality and friendly service ❤️😊

Rigó Jancsi is a true old-school gem that instantly transports you back to the 1980s vibe—think faded neon signs, worn wooden counters, smoky air thick with the scent of grilling chicken, and that nostalgic hum of locals chatting over cheap beers. The menu sticks to basics: juicy, flame-grilled csirkepaprikás or simple skewers with rice and pickles, served on paper plates with plastic cutlery, just like in the communist-era buffets. It's not top-tier quality—the meat can be a tad unevenly cooked, sides a bit watery at times, and hygiene feels authentically retro—but it's completely acceptable for a quick, satisfying bite without pretensions. Price-wise, it doesn't scream bargain like back in the day (a full plate runs 2500-3500 Ft), but absolutely one of the cheapest around the neighborhood compared to trendy spots charging double for less soul. Perfect for nostalgia seekers or budget hunters craving unpretentious Hungarian street food. Highly recommend for the atmosphere alone!

Aug 2024: District 12 Budapest; they no longer frost the sides of the cake, just the top. :-( Puncs torta a bit dry. Apple squares were agglutinated with no apple slices or chunks within. There is a small outdoor courtyard to the right. Skip it.

Lots of good stuff....😊 Hungarian bakeries too, ice cream, cakes....you can sit inside but it is a little bit small but they have an outside sitting area. I am always going there if I want a good and yummy dessert.
