Restaurants in Hungary usually open from around 11:00 until about 22:00, while bars and ruin bars stay open much later from Thursday to Saturday. On weekdays many places serve a napi menü, a fixed-price lunch of soup and a main course, typically from 11:00 to 15:00. Book a table for Friday and Saturday evenings and public holidays. Many bills already include a service charge (usually 10–15%); if not, a tip of around 10% is customary but never compulsory. Expect changes around holidays such as Christmas Eve, Christmas, Easter and 20 August, and call first if you are making a special trip. The listed phone number is +36 20 263 4182. It is shown in international format with the +36 country code, so it works from Hungary and from abroad alike; within Hungary you can also dial 06 instead of +36. More information is available on its website, cafe.zaj.hu.

On Google it holds a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from 577 reviews, a strong result for a café that suggests consistent service.

Beautiful cafe hosted by sweet workers! The food was great and most importantly fostered a welcoming environment for me and my family. Definitely recommend!

We visited Zaj Café in the afternoon with a group of friends for some late breakfast, and it was absolutely amazing! • The Food & Drinks: The food was super fresh, beautifully served, and so delicious. The coffee and drinks were also perfect. It is the best place if you want breakfast later in the day. • The Service: A big thank you to the staff! They were incredibly friendly, fast, and helpful, even with our group. We felt very welcome. • The Atmosphere: The café is beautiful and cozy. It was the perfect spot to relax with friends during our trip. Conclusion: If you are in Budapest, you must visit this place. Highly recommended! Thank you for a wonderful afternoon – we will definitely come back! 🇭🇺☕️✨

At Zaj Cafe, one finds a battle between the timeless and the misguided. The traditional pillars are, frankly, beyond reproach: the service is a masterclass, the coffee is proper, and the Rákóczi túrós is a transcendent, jam-covered (as it should be) artifact of a better era. When they stick to the classics, it is a triumph of city life under a cozy, shaded terrace. However, the moment they attempt to 'innovate,' the wheels come off the wagon. The omelet seems to be undergoing an identity crisis, presenting itself as a puffed-up soufflé rather than a simple, honest breakfast. It is decent, but unnecessary. And then there are the coffee cups—dark, dramatic ceramic vessels that prioritize 'artistic statement' over the basic human need to sip a liquid without a struggle. If it isn’t broken, don’t 'rethink' it into an obstacle. Five stars for the tradition; and one minus for the innovation. As always, YMMV.

One of the most friendly (and dog-friendly!!!) place in the 6th district. Everything is perfect: the coffee, the service, the food (try the Rákóczi Túrós, please, this is the original receipt and perfectly made). And full of handmade artistic ceramics, you can buy or just admire them :)

The interior design is nice; however, the café was completely empty at the time of my visit. The staff and owners were standing in the middle of the café and speaking loudly across the space, which affected the atmosphere. Although the waitress tried to be kind, the overall experience did not feel particularly welcoming. The prices are higher than average for Budapest, yet there was nothing especially distinctive to justify them. It may be suitable for takeaway, but I personally would not choose to visit again.
