This is a marvelous memento of the roman age in the middle of District III. of Budapest, surrounded by modern buildings and streets with bustling car traffic. The arena part of this building (the actual grounds, were the fights took place) is even larger than that of the Colosseum in Rome. However, the seats were not nearly as numerous and the walls lower, and most of them were dissasembled through the ages. The place is free to visit anytime, but the most interesting time to see it is during 'Amfifest', an event usually held some time in the second half of september, when traditionalists flood the place bringing back the clothes, garments and accessories of the antiquity, dressed up as roman legionaires, german invadors, sarmata local dvellers of Pannonia, emperors and gladiators, slaves and roman patrician families. I am sharing here a video which was made during a concert as a closing etude of 2025's Amfifest.

For people who love to see historical ruins in nations outside Italy, then, Budapest has a few sites worthy visiting for their archeology uniqueness, including one site in Margaret Island’s Dominican Convent, which is medieval Catholic convent, and Obuda’s Katonavárosi Amfiteátrum which is Roman Ruins. For tourists who want to enjoy site visit with quietness and serenity, without many people nearby, then, Katonavárosi Amfiteátrum in Obuda of Budapest is perhaps the better choice. Visitors can even enter and walk the open theater ground, climb the remaining seating area, and it can be a perfect site for photo taking for couples, lovers other than nature and history lovers who enjoy green in Spring and early summer. The theater has English directory and explanation and is open for free entrance, and it is generally well maintained, except few doggie poops on the ground. Katonavárosi Amfiteátrum has Budapest Bus No 9 in nearby, and Bus No 9 does connect to various metro stations, including Budapest city center Astoria.

A historic landmark located in Obuda. It was surprising to see they allow people to enter and walk all around these building remains ruins. There were many students loitering near the structures. While the remains are impressive, I would not recommend going out of your way to visit.
