Budapest District X is one of Budapest's 23 districts. Life in the capital moves at a big-city pace: businesses often keep longer hours than in smaller towns, many shops, bars and restaurants stay open late, and nonstop shops serve customers around the clock. The Danube banks, Buda Castle and Andrássy út are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Széchenyi, Gellért and Rudas baths and the ruin bars of District VII draw visitors all year. Public transport is run by BKK, with four metro lines, trams, buses and the HÉV suburban railway; on Friday afternoons and before long weekends the roads out of the city jam up, so leave extra time. In Budapest, BKK passes and tickets can be bought in the BudapestGO app, and parking in the centre is charged by zone, typically on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00.

The old industrial workshop hall is a fantastic setting, giving the museum a wonderful atmosphere. There are several huge vintage trains and buses, which are impressive to see and great for children. Unfortunately, that is where the positives end. The current museum offers only a fraction of what the old one did. It feels like a huge missed opportunity—more of an embarrassment than an exhibition Budapest can be proud of. There are no interactive educational exhibits or engaging information panels aimed at primary-school children. So much more could have been done to bring the history of transport to life. Refreshments are limited to vending-machine coffee and chocolate, the gift shop is a joke, and, most embarrassingly, the toilets are housed in a container. It will keep the children occupied for a couple of hours, but it certainly does not justify the admission price. A brilliant venue with enormous potential, let down by what is actually on offer.

The museum is well prepared for small children too: coloring pages, doceumentaries, sensory walls and a playground for practicing traffic rules.

A highly atmospheric place but a bit empty – not as many exhibits as we were expecting. Also the place seems to be in some state of disrepair and looks like it's awaiting renovation. However, the ÁRPÁD railcar is worth the admission price alone – beautifully restored and you can go inside – gorgeous interior. Also the MÁV 242 Steam engine is a sight to behold – rather intimidating and unreal – like something made for a movie. The museum is wheelchair accessible but some of the exhibits are only accessible by steps. Be careful if using Google Maps to find this place – it led us a merry dance. When you get off the bus, cross the road and just go through the big gates with 'OPERA EIFFEL' on the fence to the left of them, and turn left. Visit soon as they're planning to rebuild and extend the place. It may lose some of its forlorn and haunting vibe.

🚂 🚃🚆 When you find yourself in this museum, you're either a dad, a 5 year old boy, or a train nerd with the only mate you could convince to join you on the weekend. It's an impressive collection of trains, some of which you can go inside and feel like you're a part of the 1920s European aristocracy. If you're more into old buses or cars, you will find some too, but can't go inside. There are some descriptions in English and plenty of funny old propaganda posters. If you visit in autumn or winter, dress like for a polar expedition, the place is in old Maintenance Depot—a huge hangar—already freezing when it's 18 degrees outside.

Temporary exhibition of the transport museum, in the amazing old industrial building of the former railway repair workshop. Was well displayed with lots of information in English as well - some of the trains you can climb onboard. Looks like the future plans for the site would take away any of its character and turn it into some kind of horrible glass box, hope this doesn’t happen as it would take away all character of the site and be a waste of money - but I guess where there is waste, someone fills their pockets…
