About Budapesti Történeti Múzeum / Vármúzeum

A BTM Vármúzeum az egykori királyi palota Gellért-hegy felőli szárnyában, történelmi hangulatot árasztó környezetben található.

A látogatók bejárhatják a középkori palota helyreállított termeit, az egykori várkápolnát és gótikus termet, valamint megtekinthetik a múzeum egyedülálló kincseit: a magyar-Anjou címeres selyemkárpitot, a rendkívüli művészi értéket képviselő és világviszonylatban is egyedülálló gótikus szoborleletet, vagy a Mátyás király palotájának pompájáról tanúskodó márvány kőfaragványokat.

A Vármúzeum kiállításai a palotatörténet mellett Budapest történetének meghatározó eseményeit és személyiségeit is bemutatják.

IMO the best history museum in Budapest, and definitely worth the price. Especially the “Light and Shadows” exhibition on the first floor is amazing, it tells the story of Budapest very well with illustrations and lots of detail. The basement shows the (few) remains of the medieval castle, which was destroyed and then built over by the baroque place that is there today. Spent 3 hours there overall. Didn’t go to Stephen’s hall, as 5 eur for one room seems steep.

This was the first museum I visited during my trip. I really liked my time here and I wish I could have explored more of it. I particularly liked the medieval music listening station in the castles basement. Also, they had a nice collection of swords.

There is a free QR code map. Highly recommend having that as it is easy to get lost and the basement floor. Staff was lovely, they helped you around in case of questions. There were really interesting and interactive exhibitions. Both Hungarian and English. Highly recommend! With a ticket you can pass to multiple exhibitions based on 4 floors. The St Stephen hall is also amazing. Definitely worth it. Plenty of interesting things for kids too.

Fantastic museum, so much to see covering many different periods of Budapest's history. They also had a (temporary?) exhibition about the space race, and the role which Hungary and other Eastern Bloc countries contributed to the Soviet Union's efforts. Very interesting museum which will keep you occupied for hours.

Museum is not bad just a bit disorganised. While it is spread on 3/4 different levels, there isn't that much to see and the ticket price is a bit big compared to what you get to see. When I went a couple of the "interactive" exhibitions were broken. There are a couple of things to see, but at a certain point it is confusing so it would be useful if you had some arrows or something to follow. There are little objects, a couple of paintings and very many stones so the price seems a bit big (personally I feel like the Hungarian History Museum wich is cheaper is better than this one). An absolute waste of money is the St Stephen Hall...not worth spending that much money just to see a room. Overall not neccesarily bad but I don't think I would buy a ticket the second time. Better to take photos outside and maybe go to the art gallery instead.
