Title / Rating: 1 out of 5 Stars ⭐ WARNING to seniors and EU expats regarding this banking group! After experiencing months of bureaucratic harassment with Erste Bank in Austria back in December 2025, the exact same unacceptable treatment is now being repeated by Erste Bank Hungary. I am 80 years old and have legally relocated to Denmark. I have been trying to close my Hungarian account since March 18th, 2026. Although all documents (official Danish residence permit, IDs, Danish bank details, and a General Power of Attorney under the Hague Convention) have been submitted seamlessly via mail and email, the bank is blocking our pension funds of approx. €10,000. The employee, Dominika Bene, demands that I visit a branch in Budapest personally at my age! Even worse: my partner, Heinrich Josef Kreft, suffered a severe stroke on November 1st, 2025. We urgently need these funds for his vital medical rehabilitation. The bank completely ignores this emergency. Even a final warning sent via UPS courier directly to the CEO, Mr. Radovan Jelasity, remains unanswered. If I could give zero stars I would! I had nothing to do with them minding my own business until they took over Citibank and made me very unhappy with their twisted policies. In other words my old account I opened in 2001 was transitioned from Citibank into Erste and then the nightmare began. Today I have no access to my account, I get a nasty letter now and then sent to an old address stating that one of the accounts which is in Forint is slightly overdrawn. I cant use George bc I never was given a 7 digit code bc of a foreign cell phone number (yes Erste listen up, back then when you implemented George you would not allow a cellphone from oversees!!!). I cannot login on the computer bc George is blocking everything. They are requiring ID with a chip in George App that keeps failing no matter what ID I try! Identification on the phone keeps failing bc the bank has the wrong info on file. After all I have the original documentation from the day the account was opened with Citibank and non of that info seems to match!! The worst thing no one absolutely no one can help me. I called so many times! I think they are committing fraud and are using victims who live in foreign countries. Th

Erste refuses to open accounts for Ukrainian nationals. Very cynical given that the bank advertises "We stand with Ukraine" on its official Hungarian website.
