An imposing and beautifully composed monument that anchors the whole of Heroes’ Square. The semicircular colonnades with statues of Hungarian kings and statesmen give you a quick crash course in a thousand years of national history, and the Seven Chieftains at the base are genuinely striking up close. One note for anyone planning a visit: the Archangel Gabriel statue on top of the central column was removed for restoration when we were there, so the column stands empty a bit of a shame if you were hoping for the classic postcard shot. Still absolutely worth seeing; the scale and the surrounding square more than carry it. Best visited in the late afternoon when the light hits the colonnades, and it pairs naturally with a walk into City Park right behind it.

Famous public square with monument. Close to the Zoo and the Szechenyi Thermal Bath. Worth to stop by. No entrance fee.

Heroes' Square at the northeastern end is dominated by the Millennium Monument (Millenniumi emlékmű). The monument was built in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian Conquest and thus the founding of the Hungarian state. The monument consists of a 45-meter-high column topped by the Archangel Gabriel, holding a patriarchal cross and the Crown of St. Stephen, both in gold. At the foot of this column stands a group of equestrian statues of the seven Magyar chieftains, led by Prince Árpád. At the rear, the column is flanked by two curved colonnades containing fourteen statues of Hungarian heroes. Originally, statues of nine Hungarian and five Habsburg kings stood here (at the time of construction, Budapest was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy led by the Habsburgs). The Hungarian kings are still there, but the Habsburgs were replaced by five Hungarian figures during the time of the Hungarian People's Republic. On top of the two colonnades stand four allegorical statues representing Labour & Wealth, War, Peace, and Knowledge & Glory. A beautiful and impressive monument that is itself now more than a century old!

Heroes’ Square isn’t meant to be lived in. It’s about legitimacy, continuity, and survival as a nation squeezed between empires. That’s why it still feels tense, even on a sunny day. It was designed for parades, mass gatherings and state rituals. Notice there are no cafés on the square itself, no trees inside the monument zone, and everything faces inward. It’s architecture that asks you to look, not linger.

The millenium monument is actually the hero's square where you will see the sculptures of the hero's of Budapest. It's so beautiful in the eyes that you will feel very good.
