The Park of the Musical Gypsies is one of those places you stumble upon unexpectedly and end up remembering for a long time. It’s a peaceful little spot with statues dedicated to legendary Romani musicians, and each monument has its own story and character. The atmosphere is calm, green, and perfect for a short, meaningful walk away from the city noise. the park celebrates Hungary’s rich musical heritage in such a humble and artistic way. If you enjoy history, culture, or just discovering unique corners of Budapest, this place is definitely worth a visit. Great for a quick stop, photos, or simply sitting and appreciating something different.

The park is located in the 8th district (Józsefváros), an area historically known for its vibrant music scene and close connection to Roma culture. The idea for the park emerged in the early 2000s as a way to honor the legendary Romani musicians who helped shape Hungarian folk and café music traditions from the 19th century onward. Officially opened in 2006, it features bronze statues of some of the country’s most iconic Romani violinists and band leaders who once played in the grand cafés, restaurants, and concert halls of Budapest. The sculptures were created by Hungarian artists to reflect both the elegance and the emotional depth of Romani music, which has had a profound influence on Hungary’s cultural identity. ⸻ ✨ Fun Facts • 🪶 A living tribute: The park is not just a static memorial — it often hosts live music events, bringing Romani music to life right next to the statues of its greatest icons. • 🎼 Legends in bronze: Each statue represents a famous musician such as Pista Dankó and other celebrated Romani performers who gained national fame in the early 20th century. • 🌆 Cultural crossroads: The park sits in a neighborhood where Romani music flourished in Budapest’s gold

My friend is staying nearby and hears gunshots regularly. You better not go there at night

An interesting little area off Baross Street celebrating the rich Roma music contribution to Hungarian Folk Culture. Somewhat gloomily overshadowed by surrounding tall buildings, it nevertheless boasts four triangular pillars on which exquisite bronze portrait representations of legendary Gypsy fiddlers are displayed. A scattering of trees emerging from the occasionally weed blighted paved area of the park adds some natural green leafy elegance, especially during the summer months. Unfortunately at times, a gathering place for inebriated persons!
