It was a very nice train ride, not too expensive aswell! It was nice to see the children stepping into adult roles! There is a small communication problem as only some speak English. On the train you need HUF to purchase tickets though on either end of the railway you can purchase tickets in the ticket booth with credit card. I would definitely come again to this forest train ride!

The Children’s Railway was a lot of fun. We took Tram 56A up from the city with the kids and then rode the full return journey from Hűvösvölgy to Széchenyihegy, a scenic 12 km trip through the forest that took around 40 minutes. Looking back, another great option would be to take the chairlift up to János-hegy first and then catch the Children’s Railway from there. It would make for a great day out by combining two of Budapest’s unique attractions. It’s definitely worth visiting, just be aware that if you’re relying on public transport it isn’t a quick activity. Getting there, enjoying the train ride and returning to the city will comfortably take up at least half a day. There’s also a nice-looking pizza restaurant right next to Hűvösvölgy station if you want to combine it with lunch. We didn’t eat there ourselves, but the wood-fired pizzas smelled incredible.

A bit of the beaten track but a lovely 45 minute ride through the forest with some spectacular views along the way. The most amazing thing is that the railway is exclusively staffed by children ( apart from the drivers). Gives me hope for European society and a complete contrast to the feral youth of the UK.

Travelled back in time 100 years! Clean, cute carriages, fantastic 40 min ride through scenic forest, view points, great facilities at both ends, walks to lookout towers, chair lift.... Run by children except train drivers and station managers.

A novel experience, you must do this when visiting Budapest! Accessible in about 40 minutes via public transport, depending on where you’re travelling from. Tickets are cheap & we were served by the most polite young man, his English was very impressive for his age. I believe you can now pay by card at the two stations at either of the line. Plenty to take in as you travel through the hills, although unfortunately it was very cold on the day we travelled, which meant fogged up windows!
