About Iparművészeti Múzeum
The main building of the Museum of Applied Arts Budapest is a masterpiece of Hungarian Art Nouveau, built between 1893 and 1896 to plans by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos. The Museum's initial aim was to create an art collection that would promote the development of Hungarian craft industries and raise the standard of public taste; besides being a museum it was to accommodate a library and a school.
Due to renovation works, the building is closed. During this time, the exhibitions and programs take place in the György Ráth Villa of the Museum of Applied Arts. In the Collection Database nearly 42 000 works of art are available for browsing online. For further information, please visit our website.

The Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest is one of those rare museums where the building itself is as important as the collection it houses. Even before entering, visitors are greeted by a remarkable composition of green ceramic roofs, intricate ornament, and flowing architectural forms that make the structure feel more like a work of art than a container for one. What many visitors may not realize is that the museum was conceived in the late nineteenth century as part of a broader effort to establish a distinct Hungarian visual identity. Its architect, Ödön Lechner, looked beyond the dominant styles of Western Europe and drew inspiration from folk traditions, Islamic art, Persian ornament, and Asian decorative cultures. The result was a new architectural language that helped shape what became known as the Hungarian Secession movement. In this sense, the museum is not merely a repository of objects but an artifact of cultural self-definition. Take time to look closely at the ceramic surfaces, ornamental details, and the extraordinary central hall. The building demonstrates how architecture, craft, design, and industry can work together to create something greater than the sum of th

MUSEUM OF APPLIED ARTS The Museum of Applied Arts stands as the third-oldest applied arts museum in the world. The marvelous building with its distinctive green roof was erected between 1893 and 1896 in the Hungarian Secession style. The interior showcases a blend of Hindu, Mogul, and Islamic designs. Unfortunately, during our visit, the museum was undergoing renovations and remained inaccessible to the public. Furthermore, the entirety of its exterior was concealed by construction wraps, depriving us of the opportunity to appreciate its exterior beauty.

Closed! I wish I could rate it 5 stars, I'm sure I would if I could have gone inside. It's closed. Since 2017. Some of the reviews here seemed to imply people had been there since 2017. The website kinda looks like it's open (there's ticket purchase link). So maybe it's specially open some days? Upon closer inspection, the hours listed here do say "closed" every day. So it's my own fault. But do your research! On the bright side, you get to wander around a cute neighborhood.

I decided to visit the Museum of Applied Arts after reading all about Odon Lechner. This guy produced some stunning buildings in Budapest but seems to be less celebrated than the likes of Antoni Gaudi for instance. To be honest the building itself is the main attraction with its stunning Zsolnay roof tiling, the interior is pure white (it wasnt this way originally) and is very eastern in style. To wander into the main foyer is free as far as I know, but I also got free entry into exhibitions on Haydn and Time, Art Nouveau furniture and an exhibition on Ottoman Carpets. In terms of the overall Museum content, think of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and you wont be far wide of the mark.
