Vörösmarty Square is one of those places in Budapest where you should simply stop for a while, sit down and enjoy the atmosphere of the city. Located right in the heart of Budapest, at the end of the famous Váci Street, the square is lively without feeling overwhelming and is a wonderful place to take a break after walking around the city. But for us, the highlight of Vörösmarty Square was definitely Gerbeaud Café. Gerbeaud is not just another café. Its story began in 1858 with Henrik Kugler, and the business moved to Vörösmarty Square in 1870. Later, Émile Gerbeaud helped turn it into one of Budapest’s most famous confectioneries and cafés, a tradition that has continued for more than 160 years. And you can actually feel that history when you sit there. We chose a table outside, right in the middle of the square, and the whole experience was wonderful: excellent coffee, beautiful desserts, impeccable service and relaxing music playing in the background. It is the kind of place where you stop checking the time and simply enjoy being in Budapest. After our rather disappointing experience at the much more famous New York Café, which we personally found overrated and poorly orga

Vörösmarty tér is one of the most lively and beautiful squares in Budapest. The atmosphere is always enjoyable with street musicians, cafés, restaurants, and many tourists from around the world. The area is very clean, well organized, and perfect for walking, relaxing, or taking photos. Its central location also makes it a great meeting point and an easy place to explore nearby attractions. During the evening, the lights and surroundings make the place even more charming. A must visit spot in Budapest for both tourists and locals.

As evening falls, the square slowly transforms from a busy city space into a living Christmas and New Year scene. Warm lights glow on the wooden stalls, the scent of mulled wine and cinnamon fills the air, and soft winter music blends with people’s laughter. Each stall feels like a small story of its own—local food, traditional sweets, and handmade crafts created with genuine care. Walking through the market here brings back a childlike sense of wonder and shared warmth, even in the cold winter air. If Christmas and the New Year are more than just dates on the calendar for you, visiting this square during the holiday season is highly recommended. It’s a place where the city truly tells its winter story.

Very lively and pleasant place, especially during the Christmas period. The square is beautifully decorated, with festive lights creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s a great spot to walk around, enjoy the surroundings, and take in the holiday spirit. Just passing through and seeing the lights and activity makes it a nice experience and a must-see area in central Budapest. At the back of the square, there is also a free little train ride for children, running from 10 AM to 8 PM which is a nice bonus for families.
