Beware when traveling with kids below 14 years old! I checked online and found that kids below 14 years old travel for free with their parents. We went on a number of buses and trains, and all was okay, passed the ticket inspections without any issues. We jumped on the metro tube to cross the river and avoid the heat, and boom! We were met by a very rude and direct lady inspector who was very proud to hand us a 33 euros fine for a ride that costs less than 2 euros. No matter what, she didn't want to listen. Of course, she was doing her job, but there should be some sort of understanding when two parents have valid metro tickets and the only one without one was a 10-year-old kid! Clearly, a misunderstanding that was not intentional!

The worst thing in Budapest! Absolute disappointing. My kids (9 and 11) were fined by controllers because of a newly implemented regulation which requires tickets to non-hungarian children in age 6 to 14. This new rule, active from June 15th 2026 not well explained and described. You simply cannot find it. Even the inspectors can't explain it well. It puts all foreign families in worse position. Later we even asked local citizens - nobody knows anything about the change. In our first bus we even entered in with the controllers inside. Despite we had valid 72-hour transport cards for the adults we approached them to ask do we need a ticket for the children, they directly jumped on us, roughly and fined the children. It was shocking, total lack of humanity, absolute human degradation. After recent rule change, these people just wait for foreigners to repress them. In addition - according to new rules no discount for foreign children ticket or card. So 7 years old kid is threated as 30 or 50 y. adult. Never seen this in other country. Absolute shame for Bugapest public transport authorities!

I am sharing this experience to warn other tourists visiting Budapest. When we arrived in Budapest, we purchased valid 72-hour BKK TravelCards. Before buying them, we specifically asked the BKK staff whether our 8-year-old daughter also needed a ticket. We were told that she did not, so we relied on that information. Later, during a ticket inspection on the metro, we were issued a 12,000 HUF penalty because of our daughter. We immediately showed her passport to confirm that she was 8 years old and explained that we had followed the information given to us by BKK staff. Nevertheless, the penalty was issued. The inspection team collected the penalty payment on the spot and then directed us to a BKK customer service office. At the office, we explained that we had acted based on the information provided by a BKK employee. However, we were told that once the penalty had been paid, it could no longer be refunded, and that our only option was to submit a formal appeal afterward. We never intended to travel without paying. We had already purchased valid travel passes for the adults in our family and relied on the information given by BKK staff regarding our daughter. I am sharing this

The public system works efficiently for locals but not very tourists friendly. English instructions are less to none existence. And it does not help when the conductors or inspectors deliberately fines tourists for unintentional mistakes rather than leniency. You let locals get away which supposedly be your focus of enforcement. I guess you make a lot more by fining tourists? In that case well done for making money but losing your reputation.

Today I had an extremely disappointing and frankly shocking experience on my very first bus ride in Budapest. Just minutes before boarding, I purchased two tickets for myself and my wife. Once on the bus, I was actively trying to find and scan the QR code to validate them, with the ticket clearly open on my phone and my camera in use, as I was unfamiliar with how the system works. At that exact moment, a ticket controller stepped in. Despite the obvious fact that I had valid tickets and was in the process of validating them, he immediately told us to get off the bus. We complied without hesitation, even though we were traveling with a baby, which made the situation even more stressful and upsetting. I calmly explained everything and showed clear proof that the tickets had been purchased just minutes earlier. Instead of showing any understanding or basic respect, the controller was incredibly rude, dismissive, and completely unwilling to listen. It felt unreasonable and unfair. In the end, we were forced to pay a fine of around 66 euros, despite having done everything right by purchasing valid tickets. The complete lack of empathy, professionalism, and basic human decency was honest
