As your enter the courtyard you’ll be greeted by four striking lion statues that guard the main entrance. These imposing stone sculptures were created by Hungarian sculptor János Fadrusz between 1901 and 1902 and were installed in 1903. The lions symbolize power and protection, and their placement is deliberate—those facing the inner courtyard sit with noble composure, while the two lions inside the gate open their mouths menacingly, baring their teeth as if to challenge intruders. Their craftsmanship captures every sinew and strand of their manes, making them enduring icons of Hungary’s royal legacy. But they have seen their share of history. Indeed, during the brutal Siege of Budapest in 1944–45, three were slightly damaged, while one was completely broken in two. Fortunately, all four sculptures were painstakingly restored, preserving Fadrusz’s powerful expression of realism and symbolic strength. Today, they remain a favourite photo spot and symbolic threshold between the public spaces of the castle and the once-private inner palace courtyard. Whether you’re admiring their regal stance or their fearsome growl, the lions remain timeless emblems of the Buda Castle’s grandeur ...

The name clearly comes from the lion statues at the entrance. The square is truly evocative; next to it is the Matthias Fountain, and beyond the gate are the museum and the national library. I recommend checking the opening and closing times, especially on weekends. Take a stroll, especially at dusk, when the statues come to life and everything transforms. It's stunning.

I finally made it to the yearly Castle Operetta Gala Concert in the royal palace and I loved every minute of it. I loved the performance of the staff of the National Operetta, the play of the orchestra and the beautiful surroundings and atmosphere! And absolutely wonderful experience for me ❤️

Only one entrance and exit accessed point via an arched gateway - which are superb and massive carving - that are guarded by 2 pairs of lions. Aside from this, there are also some statues that are incredible you can find here. It is such a big open space that can accommodate thousands of people such as dream wedding venue, concerts, and the likes. From here, you can visit the Grand National Library and St. Stephen's Hall.

LION'S COURT The Lion's Court is an enclosed courtyard accessed through an arched gateway, guarded by four lions. The monumental gate leading into the Lion's Court is flanked by two pairs of lions. The lions on the outer side of the gate convey a sense of calm and dignity, while the inner lions exude a more menacing presence. During the restoration, ornate gates of the King's Stairs and Diplomat's Stairs were removed from the Lion's Court. The entrance to the castle church and the chapel also vanished. From this point, you can visit the Hungarian National Library, whose entrance is beneath an arcaded Neo-Renaissance portico, as well as the Budapest History Museum, accessible across the arched gateway guarded by the lions.
