Interesting piece of art. Not really a totem like some have described it. Near the top of the funicular to castle hill.

The Turul statue is a Budapest institution. Cast in bronze in 1905, it depicts a falcon, symbol of the ancient Magyars and of today's nation, perched on a door with outstretched wings and a sword in its talons. Legend has it that Emese, a pregnant woman, saw the turul in a dream, and the bird revealed to her that she would give birth to the first of a line of powerful rulers. Álmos, Emese's son, became one of the seven leaders who led their people to the Carpathian Basin. Álmos's son, Árpad, was the most important "ruler" of the Magyar tribes and began a dynasty of kings that lasted three centuries. Recently, the turul has been used by some far-right political groups.

The Turul Statue at Buda Castle is one of the most recognizable representations of the mythical bird in Budapest. Perched atop the Royal Palace gates, this statue is an iconic part of the Buda Castle (the Royal Palace of Budapest) complex and one of the most photographed sights in the city. The Turul bird statue represents a mythical bird of prey, believed to be a falcon or eagle, which played a significant role in Hungarian mythology. According to legend, the Turul bird appeared to Emese, the mother of Árpád, the founder of the Hungarian nation, in a dream.

To the east of the Habsburg Steps entrance to the palace is a bronze statue from 1905 of the Turul, a hawklike totemic bird that supposedly impregnated Emese, grandmother of Árpád, the chief military commander who led the Magyar tribes into the Carpathian Basin in about AD 895. Blame it on the bird.

As I walked around looking for this statue, I stumbled on beautiful panoramic views of the city along the Danube. If you can make it to the area for sunset, do it! Beautiful views and many other sights to see nearby.
