One of the places I would definitely recommend visiting in Budapest, especially if it’s your first time in the city. The Church of Our Lady of Buda Castle (Matthias Church) is absolutely beautiful, with its unique colorful roof, impressive architecture, and amazing details. The interior is just as interesting, so I’d definitely recommend going inside if you have the time. I took quite a lot of photos here because there are beautiful views and interesting details everywhere you look. If you’re only in Budapest for one day, this is a great place to combine with the Fisherman’s Bastion and the rest of Buda Castle. You can easily spend a few hours walking around the area, enjoying the historic streets and the panoramic views over the Danube and the Parliament. If you’re staying for several days, I’d suggest coming back later in the day as well — the atmosphere and lighting can be completely different. Overall, definitely worth adding to your Budapest itinerary. It’s not just the church itself, but the whole Buda Castle area that makes this place special. One of my favorite spots in the city for architecture, history, walking around, and taking photos.

After visiting the main castle area, we walked over to this beautiful part of the town. The Gothic church is absolutely stunning from the outside with its intricate architecture, even though we didn't go indoors. Right next to it, the stone terraces offer an incredibly beautiful view over the Danube River, looking straight across at the Parliament building and the Pest side of town. It is a picturesque, fairytale-like area that you simply cannot miss when visiting Budapest!

A majestic gothic masterpiece with a jaw-dropping mosaic roof! Sitting right in the center of the Trinity Square directly behind Fisherman's Bastion, Matthias Church is the historic heart of the Buda Castle District. The Exterior: The defining feature is the breathtaking, vibrant roof covered in colorful Zsolnay ceramic tiles. The geometric mosaic patterns glisten beautifully in the sunlight and create a stunning contrast against the white stone towers of the neighboring bastion. The Interior Grandeur: Do not just look at it from the outside—paying the admission fee to go inside is worth every penny. The interior is covered from floor to ceiling in rich, warm-toned frescoes, intricate gold leaf, and stunning stained-glass windows. The Musical Highlight (The New Organ): We were fortunate enough to visit while a brilliant masterpiece by Bach was being played on the church’s spectacular new pipe organ. Hearing those powerful, deep notes reverberate through the massive, ancient gothic vaulted ceilings was a deeply moving, transcendent experience. It brought the entire history of the building to life. Traveler Tip: Check the church's schedule beforehand if you can, as they regularl

The Matthias Church (Church of Our Lady) is one of the most stunning landmarks in Budapest. From the outside, the colourful tiled roof and intricate Gothic details immediately stand out, especially set against the backdrop of the Buda Castle district. Step inside and it’s just as impressive—richly decorated walls, beautifully painted ceilings, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. It feels more like a work of art than just a church. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just great views and photo spots, this is an absolute must-see. One of those places that really sticks with you after you leave.

Great place to see panoramic views of Danube and the Pest skyline. The interiors of this church are also very nice and would rate it as must see when in Budapest. This place can get crowded, it's best to be here first thing in the morning.

Visiting Matthias Church was one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Budapest. Perched beautifully on Castle Hill right beside Fisherman’s Bastion, this church immediately impresses with its distinctive architecture and the vibrant, patterned tiled roof that stands out dramatically against the sky. The setting in the historic Buda Castle District is pure magic — cobblestone streets, charming old buildings, and breathtaking viewpoints everywhere you turn. It genuinely feels like walking through a postcard. Inside, the experience is even better. The interior is rich with stunning frescoes, intricate paintings, and colourful patterns that cover the walls and ceilings. Every detail is crafted with such care that you can easily lose track of time just admiring the artistry. A real highlight is climbing the tower for the panoramic views over Budapest. From up there, you get an unforgettable perspective of the Danube River, the grand Parliament Building, and the sprawling city rooftops below. Overall, Matthias Church is far more than just another historic building — it’s a living masterpiece where architecture, art, and stunning location come together perfectly. Don’t miss it!

A breathtaking masterpiece in the heart of the Buda Castle District. The first thing that catches your eye is the stunning Zsolnay ceramic roof with its vibrant, colorful patterns. Inside, the attention to detail is incredible—every wall is covered in intricate Neo-Gothic frescoes and the stained glass windows create a beautiful, ethereal light. It’s easily one of the most unique and photogenic churches in Europe. A must-visit when in Budapest

Visiting Matthias Church was one of the most memorable stops during our time in Budapest. Sitting beautifully on the castle hill right next to Fisherman’s Bastion, the church immediately stands out with its unique architecture and colorful tiled roof. The patterned tiles on the outside are stunning and make the church look almost like a piece of art against the skyline. The location itself adds to the charm. Being part of the historic Buda Castle District, the entire area feels straight out of a postcard with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and incredible viewpoints of the city. Step inside the church and the beauty continues. The interior is filled with intricate frescoes, detailed paintings, and vibrant patterns covering the walls and ceilings. Every corner seems thoughtfully decorated, and you can easily spend time just looking up and appreciating the artistry and craftsmanship. One of the highlights is climbing the tower, which offers stunning panoramic views of Budapest. From the top, you get a fantastic perspective of the Danube, the Parliament building in the distance, and the rooftops of the city. Overall, Matthias Church is much more than just a historic site.
