Carved directly beneath Budapest’s iconic hilltop palace, this historic tunnel is more than just a transit route—it's a time capsule. Walking or driving through its vaulted stone interior feels like stepping onto a moody, atmospheric film set, thanks to the dramatic play of shadows and subtle lighting. Far less chaotic than the city's mainstream landmarks, this engineering marvel offers a quiet, intriguing detour for those looking to experience Budapest’s historic charm from a completely fresh perspective.

Getting crazy on the waltzers But it's the life that I choose Hey, sing about the six-blade, sing about the switchback And a torture tattoo And I've been riding on a ghost train Where the cars they scream and slam And I don't know where I'll be tonight But I'd always tell you where I am In a screaming ring of faces I've seen her standing in the light She had a ticket for the races, yeah Just like me she was a victim of the night I put a hand upon the lever Said, "Let it rock and let it roll" I had the one arm bandit fever There was an arrow through my heart and my soul And the big wheel keep on turning Neon burning up above And I'm just high on the world Come on and take a low ride with me girl On the tunnel of love Yeah, love It's just the danger, danger when you're riding at your own risk She said, "You are the perfect stranger" She said, "Baby, let's keep it like this" It's just a cake walk, twisting baby, yeah, step right up and say "Hey Mister, give me two, give me two now, 'cause any two can play" And the big wheel keep on turning Neon burning up above And I'm just high on the world Come on and take a low ride with me girl On the tunnel of love Oh, love, love Well, it's b

If you visit The Szechenyi Chain Bridge you need to go and see the Buda Castle Tunnel. This tunnel spans 350 meters, linking the Buda bridgehead of the Szechenyi Chain Bridge with the Krisztinavaros neighborhood west of Castle Hill. Its construction commenced in 1853, and it was accessible for traffic by 1857. The eastern gate boasts an eclectic classicizing design, while the western gate, destroyed during the war, was reconstructed in 1949. We had a lot of fun discovering the bridge and this tunnel and in our opinion it's a must to see if you visit Budapest.

BUDA CASTLE TUNNEL The Buda Castle Tunnel spans 350 meters, linking the Buda bridgehead of the Szechenyi Chain Bridge with the Krisztinavaros neighborhood west of Castle Hill. Its construction, guided by Adam Clark's plans, commenced in 1853, and it was accessible for traffic by 1857. Until 1918, a toll was required for passage. The eastern gate boasts an eclectic classicizing design, while the western gate, destroyed during the war, was reconstructed in 1949. Toward Clark Adam Square, the tunnel's end houses the service apartment for the Chain Bridge's bridge master. A sidewalk aligns with the tunnel's south side, yet pedestrian use is discouraged due to vehicular noise and air pollution, as indicated by a posted sign. In 2013, the tunnel gate's roof was renovated, and a new barrier was installed to enhance safety and prevent accidents. We crossed the tunnel by taxi and then took the Chain Bridge during our evening return to our hotel across the way.
