We went in for a currency exchange and were not provided any service. We weren’t greeted by anyone at the front desk, we had to ask if we could exchange our currency and were told yes. We went to the cash desk and the woman ignored us and when we asked for help, she told us if we didn’t speak Hungarian we couldn’t do business with them. If you go around the corner to Western Union, they will help you without a problem.

I am very disappointed with my experience at OTP Bank. Although I live in Debrecen, I am posting here on the main Budapest branch so more people can see my concern. In 2025 alone, I have already been subjected to four anti-money laundering (AML) checks on my account, even though these reviews are usually required only once a year. The most recent verification was just last month. What makes this worse is that OTP only sends these requests by regular mail, not by email or phone. If you happen to miss the letter, they will simply close your account without any warning. This practice is extremely unfair, especially for students or anyone who might not always be at their mailing address. I am a Palestinian student at a Hungarian university, supported by a scholarship and transfers from my parents. My income is fully legitimate and transparent, so these repeated checks feel excessive, unjustified, and extremely stressful. I cannot help but feel that this may be related to my background, which is deeply concerning. I expect a fairer and more respectful treatment from such a major bank in Hungary.

The worst possible banking institution I have crossed paths with . They don't have any decency in dealing with clients. Talk about a so called banking Institution where employees cant Say hello in English? They look at you with disgust ,talk about being racist ! when I called them twice hoping better service but no they keep you on hold 18 minutes , hop you from one associate to another and then HANG UP on your face ? I wasted 20 mins of my talk time calling them. Any expats or foreigners, dont even think about using them . If you do ,be ready for unexpected charges and the worst possible customer support. Scumbags!
